Great article - It reminded of Josh Packard's list in his book Church Refugees. He interviewed a hundred people who left the church and identified four common themes:

1. They wanted community… and got judgment (or nothing in return).

2. They tried to affect the life of others and the church… and got bureaucracy.

3. They wanted a conversation about questions and doubts… and got doctrine.

4. They wanted meaningful engagement with the world… and got moral prescriptions.

It sad when churches think it is the people's fault for leaving and they don't question what part the church might have played in their departure.

I was a pastor for 14 years. Now that I have left the church, I love connecting with others who are reimagining their faith for a better world!
